What is the best way to market my small business?
That’s a big question packed into a small sentence, right? And its actually a question I get asked a lot, usually the moment a small business owner finds out I run a marketing consultancy. And somehow the askers always think there’s an easy answer.
“There must be a template, there must be a pathway, there must be a recipe” they say. “Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it!”
Well. I’d love to help you, small business owner, but its not always that simple.
After all, it’s YOUR business. No one knows it better than you do. No one else knows the challenges you face, the relationships you have with your customers, the limits of your resources, your own strengths and weaknesses, or the goals and plans you are working on after hours.
So when I’m asked about how best to market a small business the answer is never one of a one-size-fits-all reply. There is no cookie cutter for small business marketing. In fact, it’s very likely that your question will be met with another question from me, and another, and another, until I’m sure that I understand your needs and your goals.
I like to know a lot about you, about your business, about what pain points you feel and where you would like to end up before I venture an opinion about how to market your small business.
And that’s just the beginning.
You may think you know what steps are needed, what ingredients have been missing, and what you would like the marketing plan to look like.
Well that’s a good place to start. But I’m warning you now, I’m going to grill you – in the nicest possible way! – about whether your plans are integrated, whether you know what your goals are, how you plan to measure them and whether you’ve considered any other options.
Our shared goal needs to be a total pooling of our knowledge and skills. We need a really robust conversation so that your business knowledge and my marketing expertise become one. And the only reason we drill down so deeply is so that you can be as sure as you can be that you’re not taking unnecessary steps or veering down the wrong path when you start your marketing campaign.
Because that’s how best to market a business.
